How to find out that my server is undergoing DDoS attacks before when is already out of service? How to detect DDoS attack?

Of course, there're apps and 3rd party providers, but even without it, all modern web servers enable you to get the stats or/and set up the servers to behave differently under DDoS attack (under overwhelmingly high load).
Stats from your DNS provider (if you've provided with your DNS operator)? If we don't count on any extra software, then anyone of web servers such as Nginx, LiteSpeed, Apache (and so on...) has got files named similarly to "access log".
