Hopefully, you know about "cryptocurrency mining" (renting a processing power), a way to earn some small money.

As a result of the newly created profit-driven demand in the last few years rapidly increased Bitcoin mining hardware supply enabling you to build a "super computer" from connected multi GPU motherboards (a lot of motherboards and GPUs per each one).

Only one single non-clustered computer, multi-GPU motherboard will many times outperform any computer, which you could have ever have seen. I can mention B250 - mining motherboard having 19 PCI-E Slots, 7 GPU motherboard supporting AMD R9 390X performing 5914 GFlops (6 TFlops x 7 = 42 TFlops), or there's 12 GPU (TB250-BTC PRO) and 6 GPU (Biostar AMD A320 TA320 BTC Cryptocoin Mining ATX Motherboard) from the same producer.

To compare, for example, Raspberry Pi 3 B+ can reach around 24 GFlops and 3-5 years old laptop roundly the same, whereas the mentioned Bitcoin mining machines are measured in TFlops (Tera Flops, not Giga Flops), e.g. those 42 TFlops.

Comparably, scientific cluster named Earth Simulator built in 2002 was reaching its peak performance at 35.86 TFLOPS. This one machine calculated enormously huge data of the environment. 36 TFlops was enough to make prognosis for long years ahead. Here's a list of historical super computers. Nowaday, new super computers process Peta Flops (PFlops), not merely TFlops. However, small single GPU mining machines made up for few bugs (it can cost from $200 if you check Ebay and use old processors such as the processors used in many bigger projects) are capable to reach similar performance like supercomputers from year 2002.
